Competitive Strengths

Established manufacturing base with growing investment potential

The South West has a well-established manufacturing base spanning minerals processing (alumina, lithium, minerals sands), fabrication, food and beverage, engineering and industrial services. Increasingly the region is playing a growing role in the energy transition supply chain to support renewables, decarbonisation and critical infrastructure. Opportunities exist in fabrication, component manufacturing, maintenance, engineering services and innovation to support Western Australia’s decarbonisation agenda.

Strategic infrastructure linking industry to global markets
The South West’s manufacturing sector is supported by a network of strategic industrial precincts, available industrial land and well-established infrastructure that connects businesses to domestic and international markets. Access to Bunbury Port, major road and rail freight networks, the South West Interconnected System (SWIS), and industrial hubs across the region provide a strong foundation for manufacturing growth, investment attraction and participation in new energy and value-added supply chains.

The Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Hub (AMTECH) in Bunbury is a transformative initiative designed to strengthen Western Australia’s advanced manufacturing capability and position the South West at the forefront of industry innovation. The AMTECH precinct development will bring together manufacturing, research, education and workforce development, anchoring a new era of advanced manufacturing—creating skilled jobs, strengthening supply chains and enabling local delivery of energy transition technologies.

Local Content Support

Local content initiatives help South West businesses connect with procurement opportunities, strengthen capability and increase participation in major projects and government supply chains. Through the Local Content Advisor Network and WA Industry Link, businesses can access support, information and connections that enhance competitiveness, build local partnerships and maximise the economic benefits flowing to regional communities.
